Why this series
Karaniwan sa isang pastor, sa simula ng taon, magse-share ng vision for the church na ipinagpray at napagkasunduan ng mga leaders ng church. Well, ginagawa ko rin naman ‘yan the past few years. Pero ngayon, wag muna nating pag-usapan ‘yang vision for the church, o kung ano ang tinatanaw natin na mangyayari this year or sa mga susunod na taon—as if naman nakikita natin kung ano ang mangyayari, at kung meron mang itinuturo sa atin itong pandemic na ‘to, ay yung pwedeng ma-cancel anumang vision na ‘yan na meron tayo sa taong 2020 o 2021. Meron naman din siyempre tayong tinatanaw this year or the next few years, at hindi ko naman sinasabing hindi na mahalaga yun. But there is something more important than that.
Sa halip na vision for the church, mas mahalaga yung vision of God—yung makita natin ang Diyos, tanawin natin yung ipapakita niya sa atin, at pagmasdan nating mabuti kung sino siya para sa atin. Wala nang mas mahalaga pa kaysa sa mamasdan ang kagandahan ng Diyos. Kaya nga ito ang isang bagay na pinakaaasam ni King David:
One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple. Psalm 27:4 ESV
“To gaze upon the beauty of the Lord.” Hindi lang makita, kundi mamasdang mabuti ang kadakilaan ng Panginoon. And this is my prayer for all of us sa five-part sermon series natin simula ngayon, entitled “Seeing God.” At ang main text natin throughout this series ay Isaiah 6:1-13. Pag-aaralan natin ang passage na ‘to in five parts.
Sa part 2 next week, titingnan natin kung ano ang nakita ni Isaiah, kung sino ang Diyos (vv. 1-4).
Isaiah 6:1–4 ESV: In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke.
Sa part 3, titingnan natin kung ano ang nakita ni Isaiah tungkol sa sarili niya pagkatapos na makita niya kung sino ang Diyos (v. 5). So, mas makikilala lang natin ang sarili natin nang mas mabuti (at makikita kung gaano kalala ang kalagayan natin) kung ikukumpara sa kabanalan ng Diyos.
Isaiah 6:5 ESV: And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”
Sa part 4, titingnan natin kung ano ang ginawa ng Diyos para kay Isaiah, at kung paanong sinasalamin din nito ang gawang pagliligtas ng Diyos sa ating mga makasalanan (vv. 6-7).
Isaiah 6:6–7 ESV: Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”
Sa last part, titingnan natin kung ano ang nais ng Diyos na gawin ni Isaiah in response sa ginawa sa kanya ng Diyos, at kung paanong tayo rin ay tutugon sa pagliligtas sa atin ng Diyos sa pamamagitan ng pagsamba, pagsunod, at pangangaral ng kanyang salita (vv. 8-13).
Isaiah 6:8–13 ESV: And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.” And he said, “Go, and say to this people: “ ‘Keep on hearing, but do not understand; keep on seeing, but do not perceive.’ Make the heart of this people dull, and their ears heavy, and blind their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.” Then I said, “How long, O Lord?” And he said: “Until cities lie waste without inhabitant, and houses without people, and the land is a desolate waste, and the Lord removes people far away, and the forsaken places are many in the midst of the land. And though a tenth remain in it, it will be burned again, like a terebinth or an oak, whose stump remains when it is felled.” The holy seed is its stump.
Pero bago yung mga ‘yan, pag-usapan muna natin ngayon kung paanong nakita ni Isaiah ang Diyos, sabi niya, “I saw the Lord” (Isa. 6:1), at kung makikita rin ba natin ang Diyos. Hindi lang naman kasi kay Isaiah nagpakita ang Diyos. Kay Jacob din, “I have seen God face to face” (Gen. 32:30). Kay Moses din nakikipag-usap ang Diyos “face to face” (Exod. 33:11; Deut. 34:10). Meron ding ganyang experience ang mga Israelites. Sabi ni Moses sa kanila, “The Lord spoke with you face to face” (Deut. 5:4).
Ikaw, gusto mo bang makita rin ang Diyos na tulad nila? Now, be careful in answering that question. There is a sense na nakakapangilabot kung mangyayaring makita natin ang Diyos, “for our God is a consuming fire” (Heb. 12:29). Tutupukin ka ng apoy, nakamamatay, kung makikita mo ang Diyos. Kaya nga yung mga saints sa Old Testament understandably ay natatakot, alam nila ‘yan. Kaya sabi ni Isaiah ay hindi, “Mapalad ako,” kundi, “Woe is me!” (Isa. 6:5), “Patay ako.” Sinabi ni Jacob, “I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered” (Gen. 32:30). Nung nagpakita ang Diyos sa mga Israelita “out of the midst of the fire” (Deut. 5:4), they “were afraid of the fire” (v. 5). Sabi nila:
Deuteronomy 5:24 ESV: And you said, ‘Behold, the Lord our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire. This day we have seen God speak with man, and man still live.Si Gideon natakot din:
Judges 6:22–23 ESV: Then Gideon perceived that he was the angel of the Lord. And Gideon said, “Alas, O Lord God! For now I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face.” But the Lord said to him, “Peace be to you. Do not fear; you shall not die.”
Pati mga parents ni Samson:
Judges 13:22 ESV: And Manoah said to his wife, “We shall surely die, for we have seen God.”
So, uulitin ko, gusto mo bang makita ang Diyos? Kung oo at makikita natin ang Diyos, paano? Paanong hindi tayo mamamatay at the sight of the glory of God? Paano nagiging “life-giving” (sa halip na nakamamatay!) at “life-transforming” itong “vision of God” na ‘to? At kung life-giving at life-transforming ito, how do we respond para sa sarili nating buhay at para sa iba? So, all throughout this series, I will try to make applications related sa conversion and evangelism (paano tayo magkakaroon ng buhay at kung paano natin ito ibabahagi sa iba), at sanctification and discipleship (paano natin mararanasan ang pagbabago sa buhay at paano tayo makakatulong sa iba nating kapatid kay Cristo). Ito ang main pastoral reasons motivating me to spend five weeks in this series.
Back to our main question ngayon: Paano natin makikita ang Diyos sa paraang nagbibigay-buhay at bumabago sa buhay?
Let’s start with God. At dyan naman talaga tayo dapat magsimula.
God
Ang Diyos ay parehong hindi nakikita at nakikita. Let me explain. Ang Diyos ay Espiritu (John 4:24). Hindi siya physical being. Ibig sabihin, invisible siya— “the invisible God” (Col. 1:15), “immortal, invisible, the only God” (1 Tim. 1:17). Hindi siya makikita with our naked physical eyes. He “alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see” (1 Tim. 6:16). Oo nga’t si Isaiah ay sinabi niyang nakita niya ang Diyos, pati sina Moses at Jacob. Pero kung ang pag-uusapan ay yung fullness of the glory of God, wala ni isa mang tao ang nakakita nun at makakakita nun. “His greatness is unsearchable” (Psa. 145:3).
Hindi natin siya lubos na makikita, at kung makita man natin ang bahagi ng pagka-Diyos ng Diyos, iyon ay hindi dahil sa capacity or ability natin to see him. Iyon ay dahil pinili niya, in his sovereign will, to reveal himself, to show himself to us. Makikita lang natin ang Diyos kung ipapakita niya ang sarili niya sa atin, at kung ano ang gusto niyang ipakita sa atin tungkol sa kanya. “What can be known about God is plain to [us], because God has shown it to [us]” (Rom. 1:19). Ang Diyos na nagsabi na “Let there be light,” ay nagpapakilala sa atin sa pamamagitan ng kanyang nilikha. Tinatawag ito na “general revelation.” “The heavens declare the glory of God” (Psa. 19:1). Yung “invisible attributes” ng Diyos tulad ng kanyang “eternal power and divine nature” ay malinaw na makikita sa pamamagitan ng mga bagay na nilikha niya (Rom. 1:20).
So, God is totally sovereign kung ano ang ipapakita niya sa atin, at tayo naman ay totally dependent sa kanya para makita ang mga ipapakita niya sa atin. At ayon sa capacity na ibinigay niya sa atin para makita at makilala siya. Kay Isaiah, nagpakita siya sa anyo na kayang makita ng capacity na meron siya, “to perceive the inconceivable majesty of God” (John Calvin, Commentary on Isaiah 6). Nagpakita rin ang Diyos sa ibang tao sa Old Testament, but “never appeared such as he actually is, but such as the capacity of men could receive” (John Calvin).
Now, let’s talk about man, at kung ano ang capacity natin na makita ang Diyos.
Man
Walang kapasidad ang tao na makita ang Diyos. Yung kaningningan ng kadakilaan o glory ng Diyos ay sobrang liwanag sa paningin ng isang tao. Nakikita nating bahagya ang liwanag ng araw, pero subukan mong tumingin nang diretso sa araw, na walang eye protection, hindi mo kakayanin. Kung makikita nating nang diretsahan ang Diyos, at lalo pa kung lalapit tayo sa presensiya niya, matutupok tayo ng kanyang “consuming fire” (Heb. 12:29). Sigurado yun. Nang hilingin ni Moses sa Diyos na, “Please show me your glory” (Exod. 33:18), sinabi sa kanya ng Diyos na sasabihin niya kung ano ang pangalan niya at ipaparanas niya sa kanya ang goodness and grace niya. Pero sabi ng Diyos, “But you cannot see my face (speaking na para bang anyo ng isang tao, ibig sabihin hindi sa makikita nang mukhaan, harapan, at lubusan), for man shall not see me and live” (v. 20). Kaya bandang likuran lang ng Diyos ang pinakita niya kay Moses (v. 23).
Kapag hiniling mo sa Panginoon na, “Open my eyes, Lord. I want to see you,” be careful what you wish for. Kung makikita mo nang mukhaan ang Diyos, mamamatay ka. Gustuhin man ng Diyos na ipakita nang lubos ang kaningningan ng kagandahan niya, hindi mo kakayanin, ikamamatay mo. But we have another problem. Bulag tayo. Physically, nakakakita ka. But spiritually speaking, apart from the enlightening grace of God, bulag tayo sa katotohanan kung sino ang Diyos. Ito ang fallen o sinful human nature natin. Dahil sa kasalanan we were spiritually blind. Gawa din ito ng diyablo.
2 Corinthians 4:3–4 ESV: And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.But we cannot fully blame the devil for our blind condition. We are equally responsible. Bulag na nga tayo, we loved being in the dark.
John 3:19 ESV: And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.
Wag mong isipin na yung mga masasahol na mga kriminal lang ang nasa kadiliman at bulag sa katotohanan. Even religious people na sinasabing Christians sila pero nagtitiwala sa sarili nilang gawa at hindi kay Cristo. Heto ang hatol ni Jesus sa mga Pharisees during his time: “Woe to you blind guides…You blind fools!…You blind men!…You blind guides…You blind Pharisee!” (Matt. 23:16, 17, 19, 24, 26). At ang mas malala, hindi nila alam na bulag sila. Bulag sila sa katotohanang bulag sila. At ganun din naman tayo, we were blind to our own blindness (Paul Tripp). Buti na lang sa awa ng Diyos, binuksan niya ang mata natin, “The Lord opens the eyes of the blind” (Psa. 146:8). Kaawa-awa ang kalagayan natin, habag lang ng Diyos ang pag-asa natin.
Christ
Kaya dumating si Cristo, the Son of God. Para ano? Para ipakita sa atin kung sino ang Diyos at para buksan ang mga mata natin.Oo, dumating si Cristo para ipakita kung sino ang Diyos. Qualified siya, at siya lang ang qualified to do that dahil walang sinumang tao ang nakakita sa Diyos maliban sa kanya, “he has seen the Father” (John 6:46). Totoong tao siya, totoong Diyos din siya. John 1:18 ESVNo one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.
Katunayan, nung banggitin ni apostle John sa John 12:40 as fulfillment nung sinasabi sa Isaiah 6:10 tungkol sa pagkabulag ng mga tao at katigasan ng puso at ayaw maniwala kay Jesus bilang Messiah, ganito ang sabi niya sa v. 41, “Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him.” The glory of God na nakita ni Isaiah sa Isaiah 6 ay walang iba kundi ang glory din ng Anak ng Diyos, ang Panginoong Jesu-Cristo. Yun din yung glory na nakita nina Peter, James and John nang isama sila ni Jesus sa bundok, when he was transfigured before them. Nagbagong-anyo, ipinasilip sa kanila nang bahagya, preview kumbaga, ang kaningningan ng pagka-Diyos niya: “they saw his glory” (Luke 9:32). Kaya nasabi ni Pedro sa sulat niya, “we were eyewitnesses of his majesy” (2 Pet. 1:16). Sinabi din yun ni John, “We have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father” (John 1:14).
So, kung sinuman ang nakakita sa Diyos Anak ay nakakita rin sa Diyos Ama. “He is the image of the invisible God” (Col. 1:16). Sabi ni Jesus, “Whoever sees me sees him who sent me” (John 12:45). Kaya nga nung humiling si Philip sa kanya, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us” (John 14:8), heto ang sagot sa kanya ni Jesus:
John 14:9 ESV: Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
Si Cristo lang ang paraan, wala nang iba, para makita at makilala natin ang Diyos (John 14:6). So we are totally dependent sa kanya para ipakita kung sino ang Diyos. Bulag tayo tungkol sa Diyos. Pero tulad ng mga himalang ginagawa ni Jesus, opening the eyes of the blind, he can also open our eyes para makita natin kung sino siya, kung sino ang Diyos Ama.
Matthew 11:27 ESV: All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
Makikita natin ang glory ng Diyos hindi lang sa kung sino si Cristo, kundi sa pamamagitan din ng ginawa niya sa krus para iligtas tayong mga kasalanan. For at the cross, kitang-kita ang mga invisible attributes ng Diyos. Kaya nang sabihin ni Pablo na “we preach Christ crucified,” sinundan niya ito ng “Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God” (1 Cor. 1:23-24). Makapangyarihan ang Diyos to accomplish our salvation, marunong ang Diyos para planuhin ang paraan kung paano tayo maliligtas. Pruweba? Look at Christ crucified! He “became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption” (v. 30).
Ang tanong ngayon, paano nangyari yun? Paanong tayong mga bulag ay nakita ang kaningningan ni Cristo sa kanyang ginawa para sa atin? Hindi ba’t sinabi nga ni Pablo na “stumbling block” at “foolishness” yun para sa atin (v. 23)? Sagot? Sa pamamagitan ng gawa ng Espiritu ng Diyos opening our eyes to see the glory of the gospel.
Spirit
So, kanina pa natin nakikita na sovereign ang Diyos at totally dependent tayo sa Diyos para makita natin siya. Hindi natin makikita ang Diyos Ama kung hindi niya ipapakita ang sarili niya sa atin. Hindi natin siya makikita’t makikilala kung hindi pipiliin ng Anak na ipakilala ang Ama sa atin (Matt. 11:27). At hindi rin yun mangyayari kung hindi kikilos ang Espiritu para ibukas ang mata ng puso natin para makilala ang Diyos. Ito ang dahilan kung kaya’t ang mga unbelievers ay hindi nakikita ang ginawa ng Diyos in the gospel of Jesus. Sabi ni Paul, “None of the rulers of this age understood this” (1 Cor. 2:8). Pero paano natin nakita? Quoting from Isaiah 64:4, heto ang sabi niya.
1 Corinthians 2:9–10 ESV: But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”— these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.
Yung nakatakip na katotohanan tungkol sa Diyos, ipinakita sa atin sa pamamagitan ng Espiritu. So, if you are a Christian now, the reason why you see and embrace Jesus as Lord and Savior ay hindi dahil mas marunong o mas mabuti ka kesa sa iba. Lahat naman tayo pare-parehong bulag! Hindi partially blind, o medyo blind lang! Lahat tayo ay totally blind! The difference is God’s work of shining his light in our hearts. Listen to Paul again, di ba’t sabi niya sa 2 Cor. 4:4 na ang mga unbelievers (ganun tayo dati) ay bulag sa kanilang isip at hindi nakikita ang alin? “The light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” Paano nangyaring nakakakita na tayo ngayon?
2 Corinthians 4:6 ESV: For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
God’s sovereign power in creation is the same sovereign power we experience in re-creation, or yung tinatawag na regeneration, or new birth. This is humbling. Wala tayong maipagmamalaki sa Diyos o sa ibang tao. Apart from his enlightening grace, hindi natin makikita si Cristo, hindi natin tatanggapin ang gospel na mabuting balita. It is also amazing! Nakamamangha ang biyaya ng Diyos na kakaawaan niya ang isang tulad ko.
Pero hindi dun natatapos yun. Nakita natin yung work ng Holy Spirit in regeneration and conversion. Dun tayo nagsimula sa buhay Cristiano. Pero nagpapatuloy ang gawang iyon araw-araw in our sanctification, para maging tulad tayo ni Cristo, as God re-creates us in his image: “being renewed in the knowledge after the image of its creator” (Col. 3:10); “created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness” (Eph. 4:24); “to be conformed to the image of his Son” (Rom. 8:29). Paano nangyayari ‘to? Gawa ng Holy Spirit habang ibinabaling niya ang paningin natin kay Cristo:
2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV: And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
Nagkaroon tayo ng buhay nang makita natin ang kagandahan ni Cristo. Binabago ang buhay natin araw-araw habang mas tinitingnan natin at kinikilala si Cristo. As we look to Christ more and more, we become like Christ more and more.
Church
Gawa ‘yan ng Espiritu. Kaya nga sabi ni Paul, “For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” But he uses means to accomplish his work. May paraan. May instrumento. At ang primary means of grace na ginagamit niya ay ang church. We call this discipleship sa context ng local church. As we help one another in becoming more like Christ, by helping one another look to Christ. Kaya nga si Cristo ang laman ng itinuturo natin sa bagong believers at sa matagal nang Christians. Ginagamit ng Diyos ang salita natin sa isa’t isa para makita natin kung sino si Cristo. Dahil siya yung “hope of glory,”
Colossians 1:28 ESV: Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ.
Walang mangyayaring discipleship kung pakape-kape lang kayo, chat-chat sa Messenger, o magkasamang naglalaro o nagba-bike. Mangyayari lang yun if we proclaim Christ to one another.Yes, mahalaga ang salita. Pero ipinapakilala rin natin sa iba kung sino ang Diyos sa pamamagitan ng klase ng relasyon natin sa isa’t isa. Ito ang point ni apostle John sa 1 John 4:12:
1 John 4:12 ESV: No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.
Makikita ang pag-ibig ng Diyos sa pag-ibig natin sa isa’t isa. Ito ang dahilan bakit tinawag ni Mark Dever ang church na “the gospel made visible.” Kasi sabi din ni Paul sa Ephesians na ang plano ng Diyos kung bakit may church ay ito— “so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places” (Eph. 3:10). Ang misyon ng church ay ipakita sa mga tao ang kapangyarihan, kadakilaan, kabutihan, at karunungan ng Diyos. So, tulung-tulong tayo na ipapangaral ang mabuting balita (the gospel), at ipapakita ito sa buhay natin at sa relasyon natin sa isa’t isa, para marami pang tao, marami pang lahi ang makita kung sino ang Diyos sa pamamagitan ni Cristo:
Acts 26:18 ESV: to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.
At kapag natapos na ang misyon natin, babalik si Cristo. “Now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face” (1 Cor. 13:12).
1 John 3:2 ESV: Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.Makikita natin siya nang mukhaan, face to face. But we’re getting ahead, malayo pa ‘yan (o baka malapit na?). As we long for that day, wag din nating kalimutan na ngayon pa lang ay makikita na natin ang Diyos.
Seeing God in the Scriptures
Paano? Through the Scriptures. Ay, yun na yun? Siguro ineexpect mo yung katulad nung kay Moses, yung merong spectacular vision. Naalala n’yo yung hiling niya kay Lord, “Please show me your glory” (Exod. 33:18)? I hope na ganun din ang prayer natin, “Lord, show us your glory. Please. Please. Please.” Paano niya sasagutin ‘yang prayer na ‘yan?
Exodus 33:19 ESV: And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The Lord.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.
Sinabi niya ang pangalan niya. Sinabi niya yung mga katangian niya na goodness, grace and mercy. Paano mo mas makikita at makikilala ang Diyos? Not apart from the Scriptures. Hindi mo makikita ang Diyos if you spend less time with your Bible. Yung prayer na makita ang Diyos, sinagot na niya, “Pick up your Bible. Basahin mo. Pag-aralan mo. Pagbulayan mo. Tingnan mo si Cristo sa Bibliya.”Pero baka sabihin mo, “E gusto ko yung tulad nina Peter, James and John, yung makita yung glory ni Christ.” Oo, sinabi ni Peter na “eyewitnesses” sila ng “majesty” ng Panginoon (2 Pet. 1:16). Pero sinabi din niya kasunod na meron tayong mas mainam kaysa dun:
2 Peter 1:19 ESV: And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
Gusto mong magliwanag ang kagandahan ng Diyos sa puso mo na nadidiliman dahil sa kasalanan? Basahin mo ang Bibliya, “to which you will do well to pay attention.” Wag mong balewalain. Pagtuunan mo ng pansin. Yan ang gagawin natin araw-araw. Yan din ang gagawin natin sa mga susunod na Linggo as we pay more attention sa ipapakita ng Diyos sa atin sa Isaiah chapter 6.
