The Foolishness of God (1 Cor. 1:18-31)

Natural Boasters

We are natural boasters. Lahat tayo may ipinagmamalaki. Whatever it is, whoever it is, nandun yung confidence natin. Siguro ang ipinagmamalaki mo, ang confidence mo ay yung marami kang pera, o maganda ang natapos mo sa kolehiyo o nakapagpatapos ka ng anak with high honors, o marami kang ministries, o yung church natin pati mga church leaders, o yung generosity mo, o yung political views mo, o yung mas tamang doktrina na alam mo kesa sa iba, o yung spiritual maturity mo.

Itong mga taga-Corinto meron din. Last week sa 1 Cor. 1:10-17 nakita nating ang sanhi ng mga divisions nila sa church ay dahil may kanya-kanyang silang “manok” – yung iba kay Pablo, yung iba kay Pedro, yung iba kay Apollo, at yung iba siyempre kay Cristo. It’s okay to follow a leader as spiritual example siyempre, lalo naman kung si Cristo. But the root of their problem was their misplaced confidence in their human leaders and in themselves. Nandun yung pride and self-centeredness.

Ano ang gamot? For Paul, walang ibang solusyon sa problemang ‘yan, at sa lahat ng problemang ia-address niya sa letter, other than the gospel. Kaya ibinabalik niya sila palagi sa kung sino si Cristo at ano ang ginawa niya sa krus para sa atin (v. 13). Kaya sinabi niyang ang focus ng ministry niya ay walang iba kundi “to preach the gospel” (v. 17). At gagawin niyang lahat ito not to draw attention to himself, para hindi sa kanya ang maging kumpiyansa nila, to make sure na hindi mawawalang kabuluhan ang krus ni Cristo.

Nawawalan ng kabuluhan ang ebanghelyo o ang witness natin sa iba dahil sa kawalan ng pagkakaisa. The gospel unites the church, our mission to preach the gospel unites the church. That is why merong amazing unity sa church natin because of the gospel. At kung meron mang mga conflicts na unresolved pa, the solution is to keep our focus on the gospel.

Kaya nga itong sinimulan niyang banggitin sa v. 17 na preaching the gospel, he expands on that topic simula dito sa vv. 18-31 na pag-aaralan natin ngayon, actually hanggang 2:1-5 na next week naman natin tatalakayin. In contrast sa “words of [human] wisdom” sa v. 17, he talks about “the word of the cross” in v. 18. Ang tinutukoy niya dito ay yung content ng message niya at yung task rin ng preaching nito. Sa v. 21 naman he talks about “what we preach” (Gk. kerygma), na primarily tumutukoy din sa content ng gospel, at di naman mahihiwalay ang preaching ng gospel na ‘yan.

Kaya sa v. 23, in-emphasize niya, “we preach (Gk. kerusso) Christ crucified.” Yung “crucified” na ‘yan sa Greek ay perfect tense. Ibig sabihin, nangyari in the past pero ang resulta o epekto nananatili hanggang ngayon. The gospel is a past event with present benefits. Kailangan natin sa araw-araw na balik-balikan ang nakaraang ginawa ni Cristo sa krus to address our problems regarding unity sa church, and regarding our misplaced confidence or boasting.

Dito sa text natin, bibigyang-diin ni Paul na: dahil wala nang hihigit pa sa gospel bilang tanging mabisang paraan ng Diyos para sa kaligtasan natin, wala na rin tayong ibang dapat ipagmalaki maliban kay Cristo at sa ebanghelyo. 

The Gospel as the Power and Wisdom of God (1:18-25)

Bakit ganun na lang ang singular focus ni Paul sa preaching ng gospel? Dahil wala nang hihigit pa sa gospel bilang tanging mabisang paraan ng Diyos para sa kaligtasan natin. Ito ang point ng message niya sa vv. 18-25.
The gospel unites the church. But also divides the world into two kinds of people. Depending on their responses to the gospel. Yung mga unbelievers, para sa kanila itong gospel, “the word of the cross” (v. 18) ay “folly” o kahangalan (galing sa Greek moria, kung saan galing ang salitang moron). Walang sense. Paano nga namang makapagliligtas ang nakahihiyang kamatayan ng isang itinuring na kriminal sa krus? It doesn’t make any sense, humanly speaking, of course. 

Because of that response, they are “perishing.” Nagpapatuloy sila sa kapahamakan, and will face the ultimate judgment of God, kung magpapatuloy sila sa kanilang unbelief. (Warning to unbelievers). In contrast naman, tayo na mga believers, kasali si Paul and the church in Corinth, “to us who are being saved [the gospel] is the power of God.” Sinabi din niya ‘yan sa Rom. 1:18. Mukhang walang sense ang death ni Jesus sa krus, but it made perfect sense, perfect wisdom in the plan of God. Mukhang weakness ang picture ni Jesus hanging on a cross. But it is powerful to accomplish our salvation. And here he talks about our salvation in the present tense. We need the gospel then, we need the gospel now. We need the gospel for our justification, we need the gospel for our sanctification.  

So, ang point ni Paul, bakit ka nga naman dedepende sa dunong at galing ng tao kung ang kahahantungan nito ay kapahamakan? That is why he uses Isaiah 29:14 sa verse 19 to support that. Sabi dun, “Sisirain ko ang karunungan ng marurunong at gagawin kong walang saysay ang katalinuhan ng matatalino” (MBB). Yung “sisirain” dito at “napapahamak” sa v. 18 ay galing sa same root word, referring to the eternal condemnation of those who trust in their own wisdom, o dun sa sariling plano nila sa buhay o kaligtasan, dun sa ang theme song sa buhay ay “I did it my way.” They will sing their miseries into hell. Gagawin ng Diyos na walang saysay ang inaakala ng mga taong may kabuluhan. God will, on that day, nullify, abolish any human wisdom. Those who regard the gospel as folly will really look like fools on that day.

Kaya tanong niya sa v. 20, “Has not God made foolish (moraino) the wisdom (sophia) of the world?” expecting this answer: “Yeah!” Bago ‘to, meron pang three questions siyang binanggit, referring to three groups of people na nagrerepresent ng mga taong ang tiwala ay sa sarili nilang dunong o pamamaraan sa buhay. The “wise,” na nagsasabing they know the way to life. The “scribe” – mga Jewish religious teachers ‘to, na bihasa raw sa interpretation ng Law. The “debater” o yung mga Greeks na mahilig sa philosophy at akalang they can answer life’s most important questions or win arguments by use of their human reason.

Walang masama sa pag-araal, sa edukasyon, sa pakikipag-argumento. Pero masama ang kahahantungan ng mga nagtitiwala sa mga yun to find acceptance with God. Kaya at the last day, Paul was picturing a scenario, na itong mga proud of their wisdom ngayon, uurong at magtatago sa kahihiyan. “Nasaan na ang marunong?” Umurong na po. “Nasaan na ang tagapagturo ng Kautusan?” Wala na pong masabi. “Nasaan na ang mga debatista?” Tameme na po.

Kasi naman, paraan ng Diyos ang siyang masusunod. Yun ang paliwanag ni Paul sa v. 21, “Sapagkat ayon sa karunungan ng Diyos, hindi niya pinahintulutang siya’y makilala ng tao sa pamamagitan ng kanilang karunungan” (MBB). In a sense may matututunan naman tayo tungkol sa Diyos sa sarili nating dunong. But he is referring here not to mere intellectual knowledge, but intimate relationship with God. He’s talking about a saving relationship with God. Malayo naman ang mararating ng human wisdom sa edukasyon, sa negosyo, sa politika, at marami pang larangan sa buhay. Pero in terms of fixing our relationship with God, sa plano ng Diyos, sa paraan ng Diyos, that’s not the way. Sabi ng Diyos, “I will do it my way.” 

Ano ang paraan niya? “It pleased God (plano niya, kalooban niya, determinasyon niya) through the folly of what we preach (the gospel and the proclamation of the gospel) to save those who believe.” The gospel is God’s way. Hindi patalinuhan ‘to, hindi pataasan ng grade, hindi pagalingan, hindi paramihan ng achievements. “Those who believe.” Just believe, put your trust in the crucified Messiah as God’s way of salvation. That’s good news for us. Pero “folly” sa tingin ng iba.

Bakit “folly”? Kasi, verse 22, ang mga Jews naghahanap ng “signs”, tulad ng sa panahon ni Jesus. Mga himalang katibayan na siya ang Tagapagligtas na darating. May mga himala naman, di ba? Pero hindi pa rin sila naniwala. The power for salvation ay wala dun sa mga miraculous healings ni Jesus, but in the healing power of the cross. Ito namang mga “Greeks,” representing the non-Jewish, ang hinahanap “wisdom,” yung kaya nilang i-explain, yung making sense sa kanila.

Pero ang ministry ni Paul ay hindi yung ibigay kung ano ang gusto ng mga unbelievers, hindi siya “seeker-sensitive.” Ang heart ng ministry niya, and it is good for us to follow, ay ibigay sa mga tao kung ano ang kailangan nila. “But…” a very strong but! Driven by his passion for the gospel, “we preach Christ crucified.” Ang “krus” sa atin ngayon palamuti sa simbahan, sa kuwintas, o display sa bahay. Pero para sa mga Judio noon, offensive, “a stumbling block,” Greek skandalon, scandalous, a morally disturbing event. Na para bang sinasabi mong good news na ang isang champion ay na-knock-out o nagcollapse ang stock market, o canceled ang holiday (Ciampa & Rosner). For the Gentiles naman, kanina pa inuulit, “folly.” 

But we care less about what people think or feel about the gospel. We will not change it, we will not diminish its message, we will not sweeten it, we will not lessen the offense of the cross, we will not make it more acceptable, we will just preach the gospel as it is. Bakit? “But [in contrast dun sa mga nagrereject ng gospel] to those who are called [tayo yun, mga believers, mga pinili at tinawag ng Diyos para maligtas], both Jews and Greeks [from all nations], Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.” Nag-iisa lang ang mabisang paraan para tayo’y maligtas at makalapit sa Diyos. Si Cristo lang at ang ginawa niya sa krus para sa atin. Salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.

So, the end of the matter is this, verse 25, “For the foolishness of God [wala naman, pero akala ng iba dahil sa foolishness ng gospel message, at sabihin na nating merong foolishness sa Diyos, it is still] wiser than men, and the weakness of God [wala namang weakness, pero akala ng iba dahil sa weakness demonstrated sa cross, it is still] stronger than men.” “God at his worst is better than humans at their best” (Ciampa & Rosner). 

Yung inaakala ng tao na tama yun pala kamatayan at kapahamakan ang kahihinatnan (Prov. 14:12; 16:25). Pero ang paraan lang ng Diyos ang tungo sa buhay na walang hanggan. That’s the wisdom and power of God on display in the gospel. So, why put your confidence in human wisdom in power kung ito ay hahantong sa kapahamakan? Kung ito ang way of the unbeliever, bakit kayo nag-aaway-away, nagyayabangan, nagkakampi-kampihan at nagkakahati-hati? Are you losing your confidence in the gospel? 

Boasting Only in the Lord (1:26-31)

Sa vv. 18-25, sinabi ni Paul na wala nang hihigit pa sa gospel bilang tanging mabisangparaan ng Diyos para sa kaligtasan natin. Dito naman sa vv. 26-31, he will spell out the lifeimplication of that important theological truth. Ano yun? Na wala na tayong dapat ipagmalakimaliban kay Cristo at sa ebanghelyo. This is the purpose of the gospel.It is important to anwer the question: Why, then, did God save us through this scandalous gospel? Again, madali nila itong makalimutan. We all have gospel amnesia.

Kaya bungad ni Paul sa v. 26, “Mga kapatid…” again, a term of endearment, communicating concern sa sinasabi niya, a brotherly reminder, “alalahanin ninyo ang inyong katayuan noong kayo’y tawagin ng Diyos…” Pay attention to this, recall this to your mind over and over again. Ano yun? Yung “calling” ninyo. Paulit-ulit na ‘yan kay Paul. Sa v. 1 pa lang, si Paul “called by the will of God to be an apostle.” Sila naman, “called to be saints” (v. 2). Dahil sa Diyos, they “were called in the fellowship of his Son” (v. 9). “Those who are called” (v. 24). This term here also, it is synonymous with salvation, yung pagpili ng Diyos, yung pasya ng Diyos at gawa ng Diyos para maligtas tayo.

The ground, the basis of our salvation is wholly resting on God’s sovereign grace. Bakit? Paliwanag ni Paul sa kanila, kung standard mundo ang pagbabatayan, konti lang naman ang marunong sa inyo, ilan ba sa inyo ang may PhD o mahusay sa debate? Konti lang naman ang powerful o influential, ilan ba sa inyo ang may position sa gobyerno o maraming followers sa social media? Konti lang naman ang tinitingala sa inyo, ilan ba ang mga milyonero sa inyo? 

Paul was not insulting their education or status or achievements. No. Ipinapaalala sa kanila na wala sa dunong, galing o social standing nila ang dahilan ng Diyos kaya pinili silang maligtas. Tulad din ng mga Israelita sa Deut. 7:7-8, hindi dahil mas marami sila, o mas matuwid kaysa sa iba. No. It is because of God’s sovereign purpose. Siya ang nagpasya. Ang kundisyon sa pagpili wala sa anumang qualifications na meron tayo, because we don’t have any. Sa tingin ng mundo, itong mga Corinthian believers, karamihan sa kanila “foolish…weak…low and despised in the world, even things that are not” (v. 27), and in a sense we all are. We are nobodies.

Pero bakit tayo pinili ng Diyos na maligtas? Dahil meron siyang purpose sa lahat ng pasyang ginagawa niya (Eph. 1:11). Dito paulit-ulit, vv. 27-28, pinili ka ng Diyos hindi dahil sa dunong mo, but “to shame the wise”; hindi dahil sa galing o husay mo, but “to shame the strong”; hindi rin dahil sikat ka o espesyal ka o VIP, but “to bring to nothing what the world considers important” (NLT).

We are all prideful beings. Simula pa sa Garden of Eden, nang sa kayabangan ng tao, bumagsak tayo with Adam and Eve, God is on an all-out mission to abolish human pride. Yun bang marealize nating lahat na wala tayong maipagmamalaki sa Diyos at sa tao. And for many people, it will take them all eternity in hell before they realize that. “So that no human being – zero, walang sinumang mayaman, marunong, o mahusay – ang “makapagmamalaki sa harap ng Diyos.”

When you come face to face with an infinitely powerful God, anong galing ang maipagyayabang mo? When you come face to face with an infinitely wise God, anong dunong ang maipagyayabang mo? When you come face to face with an infinitely rich God, who owns everything, anong meron ka ang maipagyayabang mo? 

Anumang meron tayo ngayon, anumang buhay ang nasa atin ngayon, anumang status or position ang kinalalagyan natin ngayon, lahat ‘yan galing sa Diyos, gawa ng Diyos, biyaya ng Diyos. Verse 30, “And because of him you are in Christ Jesus…” Ito ang pinakamahalagang koneksyon na meron tayo, our union with Jesus. Lahat ng hinahanap natin, ang daan tungo sa buhay na may saysay, lahat kay Jesus matatagpuan. “…who became to us wisdom from God.” He is the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Jesus. You want wisdom and power? You have it if you have Jesus “the power of God and the wisdom of God” (v. 24). You were a nobody, but became a somebody because of Jesus who is everything to us.

Iniisa-isa ni Paul yung anumang meron tayo dahil sa pakikipag-isa natin kay Cristo. Jesus is our “righteousness.” Makasalanan tayo, pero itinuring tayong matuwid sa harapan ng Diyos dahil kay Cristo (2 Cor. 5:21). At ginagawa tayong matuwid na tulad niya because of the Spirit na bigay niya sa atin. Jesus is our “sanctification.” Marumi tayo, pero nilinis tayo sa pamamagitan ng dugo ni Cristo, “sanctified in Christ Jesus, and called to be saints” (1 Cor. 1:2). And we are being made holy to become like him. Jesus is our “redemption.” Dati tayong mga alipin, slaves to our sinful desires. Pero binili tayo ni Cristo. Pinalaya, to enjoy our freedom in obeying his desires. And one day, we will be finally and fully free of sin, and death, and Satan and the sufferings of this world. Jesus is everything to us in the gospel.

If you fully realize that, and believe that deeply in your heart, ano pa ang maipagmamalaki mo sa sarili mo o sa ibang tao? And this is the goal of the gospel, of God’s decision to save us through the “folly” and “weakness” of the gospel. Para i-transfer anumang misplaced human boasting o human confidence natin at mapalitan ng God-exalting, Christ-magnifying, Spirit-dependent confidence. That is how Paul closes chapter 1, “so that, as it is written, ‘Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord” (v. 31).

Summarizing Jer. 9:23-24, “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”

The steadfast love of God, the justice of God, the righteousness of God – lahat ‘yan on full display at the cross of Jesus. Gusto ni Lord na maging gospel-focused Christians tayo because of his desire, his passion to magnify his love, justice and righteousness. We are saved to showcase, to display for others to see the worth of his glory. Hindi para i-display natin ang dunong natin o ng mga anak natin, hindi para i-display ang mga ministry accomplishments natin, hindi para i-display ang yamang meron tayo. 

Dahil wala nang hihigit pa sa gospel bilang tanging mabisang paraan ng Diyos para sa kaligtasan natin, wala na rin tayong ibang dapat ipagmalaki maliban kay Cristo at sa ebanghelyo. Si Cristo ang idi-display natin. Ang ginawa niya sa krus ang showcase ng life and ministry natin. Kaya merong mga conflicts at divisions sa inyo, sabi ni Paul sa mga Corinthian Christians, kasi ang gusto n’yong idisplay ay ang galing, husay o dunong ninyo o ng ibang tao. Let your boasting be in Christ and him crucified. And let it be your only boast, like Paul: “But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Gal. 6:14); “I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified” (1 Cor. 2:2).
