Part 19: Resoluteness (Luke 9:51-62)

All of Jesus’ followers must be resolutely committed to finish the mission entrusted to them by their Lord.  Jesus’ invitation to follow him is a call to come and die with him.

As Dietrich Bonhoeffer (the German pastor who was executed during the time of Hitler for his resolute faith in Jesus) aptly puts it, “When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die.”

That is in stark contrast to the comfortable and convenient brand of Church and Christianity becoming popular today. We are in dire need today of going back to the true meaning of Christian discipleship. We need many who will rally the church to die for the mission entrusted to us by the Lord Jesus.

Looking back (2013)

[Share evaluation of 2013 from leaders retreat…] Tapos na naman po ang isang yugto sa ministeryo natin. Yes, we have some successes. But we’re not yet done. Hindi pa po tapos ang misyong ibinigay sa atin ng Panginoon. Hangga’t mahigit 6000 pang people groups (more than 2 billion people) ang hanggang ngayon ay un-reached at un-discipled, our mission is far from over. Hindi ito ang panahon para maging kampante at parelax-relax lang.

“Follow Me”

Oo siyempre nagbabakasyon tayo, nagpapahinga, pero pansamantala lang iyon. Nitong bakasyon, Pasko, paalala sa atin na ang pagdating ni Jesus sa kanyang pagsilang bilang isang sanggol sa Bethlehem, pasimula pa lang iyon. His mission is not accomplished in Bethlehem. Hanggang chapter 2 pa lang iyon sa Gospel of Luke. Lumaki siya sa Nazareth at nang siya’y 30 taong gulang na, inihanda na siya para humarap sa mga tao (chap. 3). At mula chapter 4 hanggang dito sa chapter 9, mahigit dalawang taon siyang nangaral at gumawa ng mga himala sa Galilea para ipakilala ang sarili niya. Meron nang sumusunod sa kanya, merong kumakalaban sa kanya, meron din namang sunud-sunuran lang at hindi naman buo ang loob sa pagsunod sa kanya.

Mula sa text natin ngayon (9:51-62) hanggang sa chapter 19, naglakbay si Jesus patungong Jerusalem upang ituro ang tunay na kahulugan ng discipleship, kung ano ang ibig sabihin ng “Follow me.” Dito sa text natin, may isang lumapit sa kanya ang sabi, “I will follow you…” (v. 57). Sinabi niya sa isa pa, “Follow me” (v. 59). Ang pangatlo sabi, “I will follow you…” (v. 62).

Sa dinami-dami ng nagdiwang ng Pasko sa Pilipinas, aakalain mong ang daming mga Christians sa bansa natin. Pero alam nating malayung-malayo dito sa totoong Christianity. Kasi hindi maraming Filipino, hindi alam ang ibig sabihin ni Jesus nang sabihin niyang, “Follow me.” Marami ang hindi nalalaman ang sinasabi nila kapag sinabi nilang, “I will follow Jesus.” Nais ituro ng Panginoon sa atin ngayon, mula sa Luke 9:51-62 ang ganito: All of Jesus’ followers must be resolutely committed to do everything necessary to finish the mission he has entrusted to us. Lahat ng mga tagasunod ni Jesus ay dapat na buung-buo ang loob na gawin ang lahat ng kinakailangan para matapos ang misyong ibinigay niya sa atin.

Ano ang misyon? “Your duty is to go and preach about the Kingdom of God” (Luke 9:60 NLT). Hindi lang ito pagiging “misyonero” tulad ni Ate Malou sa mga Maranao sa Iligan. Kundi ito iyong pamumuhay – nakikita sa sinasabi, sa ginagawa, sa klase ng lifestyle na tayo ay kingdom citizens, na naipapakita natin sa mga tao kung ano ang buhay na nasa kaharian ng Diyos at inaanyayahan silang makibahagi nito. We do it resolutely – with great effort and determination, with unwavering commitment. Walang makakapigil sa atin – hindi ang sarili nating ambisyon, hindi ang pamilya natin, hindi ang trends sa lipunan natin ngayon. When we follow Jesus, we resolutely commit ourselves to his mission.

The resoluteness of Jesus (9:51)

Bakit? Kasi naman si Jesus mismo ay buung-buo ang loob sa misyong ibinigay sa kanya ng Ama. “As the time drew near for him to ascend to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem” (Luke 9:51 NLT). Oo nga’t babalik siya sa langit – plano ng Diyos iyon – pero buo ang loob niyang pumunta sa Jerusalem hindi dahil may airport doon at sasakay siya papunta sa langit. Ang nag-aabang sa kanya sa Jerusalem ay suffering, humiliation, rejection and death. Mauuna iyon bago ang resurrection, glory and ascension. Later on, he said to his disciples, “Listen, we’re going up to Jerusalem, where all the predictions of the prophets concerning the Son of Man will come true. He will be handed over to the Romans, and he will be mocked, treated shamefully, and spit upon. They will flog him with a whip and kill him, but on the third day he will rise again” (18:31-33 NLT).

Alam niyang mangyayari iyon at dapat na mangyari iyon. Pero hindi niya iyon iniiwasan, hindi tinatakasan, hindi nagdadalawang isip, hindi sinasabing, “Kayo na lang.” Oo nga’t ang kamatayan ni Jesus sa krus ay bilang kahalili natin at kabayaran sa ating mga kasalanan. Buo ang loob niyang gawin iyon para sa atin. Pero hindi lang iyon, he was also setting a pattern for all his disciples to follow.

The rejection of Jesus (9:52-56)

Buung-buo ang loob niya na kahit may rejections sa kanya, kahit may mga discomforts sa paglalakbay nila, tuloy pa rin siya. Walang makakapigil sa kanya. “He sent messengers ahead to a Samaritan village to prepare for his arrival” (v. 52 NLT). Tatlong araw din ang biyahe nila, kailangan nilang matulog at magpahinga. Kailangang magpabook sila ng matutuluyan at siyang magsusupport sa misyon nila. Madadaanan nila ang Samaria papunta sa Jerusalem. Dahil itong mga Samaritano, di-purong Judio, may hidwaan sa mga Judio at di tinatanggap ang Jerusalem na place of worship. Dahil doon, anong nangyari? “But the people of the village did not welcome Jesus because he was on his way to Jerusalem” (v. 53 NLT).

Jesus was rejected in Samaria. Ang dahilan? “Because he was on his way to Jerusalem.” They just don’t like that place. Kung sa Boracay pa sana pupunta, sama iyan. Larawan ito ng mga tao na hanggang ngayon ay ayaw makibahagi sa misyon ni Jesus dahil sa sariling kultura, tradisyon, preferences. To refuse to be a part of the mission is to reject Jesus who gave the mission. Our mission is to spread the knowledge and love of Jesus to all people in all places. Hindi mo maihihiwalay ang pagsunod kay Jesus sa pakikibahagi sa kanyang misyon. Kaya nga kapag nagpa-member ka sa church, ibig sabihin, you participate in our mission. You said yes sa 2014 budget natin, ibig sabihin buo ang loob mo na magbigay nang tapat at higit pa sa dati mong nakagawian alang-alang sa misyon natin. You said yes sa bagong elders natin, ibig sabihin, buo ang loob mo na makinig sa kanila, sumuporta, magpasakop sa kanilang leadership.

Maybe your problem is not rejection of Jesus and his mission. But your attitude towards those who reject Jesus. Tulad ng magkapatid na si James at John na di nagustuhan ang ginawa ng mga Samaritans. “When James and John saw this, they said to Jesus, “Lord, should we call down fire from heaven to burn them up?” (v. 54). Tulad ito ng ginawa ni Elias sa 2 Kings 1:10-12. Pinangalanan pa naman sila ni Jesus na “Sons of Thunder” (Mark 3:17). Siguro dahil sa kanilang burning passion. Pero sa pagkakataong ito – they have misplaced passion. Kaya anong ginawa ni Jesus? ”

But Jesus turned and rebuked them” (v. 55). Kasi hindi in-line sa purpose ng Panginoon ang inasal nila. Jesus came to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10) and not destroy them (John 3:17). James and John need to redirect their passion to what is in line with the purposes of Jesus. Kayo na mga passionate sa winning in sports or any competition – be passionate in winning souls. Kayo na passionate in business expansion, be passionate in taking part in expanding Jesus’ kingdom. Kayo na ubos-oras sa pagpatay sa mga virtual people sa mga computer games – spend your time in saving the lives of real people.

Pagkatapos na mareject sila sa isang village sa Samaria, anong ginawa nila? “So they went on to another village” (v. 56). It was not so that they may be received elsewhere. Tandaan natin na ang hanap ni Jesus ay hindi comfort kundi fulfillment of his mission. Alam naman niyang, eventually in Jerusalem, he will be rejected by the whole nation (v. 22). He will even be betrayed by a friend (v. 44). Ang nangyari sa Samaria ay isang “temporary setback.” Buong-buo ang loob ni Jesus na tapusin ang misyong bigay sa kanya ng Diyos – kahit may mga setbacks na tulad nito.

Moving On

We also have some setbacks this year. Nakakalungkot. [Share “pains” of 2013 from Leaders Retreat]. In one way or another, these things hinder God’s purposes for our church. Dahil doon, we grieve. But we’re not angry at them. At hindi ito dahilan para madiscourage at panghinaan ng loob at di na magpatuloy. We continue in our mission. We face the new year with greater expectations. The requirements of following Jesus (9:57-62)

This mission will require more of you – more of your commitment, more of your time, more of your financial resources, more of your energy. Ganoon naman ang pagsunod kay Jesus.

Resoluteness even in discomfort and danger. Dapat buo ang loob natin sa pagsunod kahit na hindi comfortable, kahit na delikado. Habang naglalakad sila papuntang Jerusalem, may nagsabi sa kanya, “I will follow you wherever you go” (v. 57). Ang bilis nagsign-up. Parang nagtanong, “Sinong gustong sumama sa field trip, sa excursion?” Taas agad ng kamay, “Ako, sama ko diyan.” Pero paalala ni Jesus, mag-isip mabuti. Huwag basta-basta. Dapat alam mo ang inooohan mo. Hindi naman tayo sa Boracay pupunta, we’re going to Jerusalem with Jesus. Kaya sabi ni Jesus, “Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place even to lay his head.” Hindi ka makakasunod kay Jesus kung di mo maiwan ang bahay mo – kung gusto mo laging kumportable, kung gusto mo secured ka. Si Jesus nga walang sariling bahay!

Resoluteness even over family obligations and personal ambitions. Verse 59, “He said to another person, ‘Come, follow me.’ The man agreed, but he said, ‘Lord, first let me return home and bury my father.'” Bahay na naman. Mahalaga naman kasi sa atin ang pamilya at dapat naman talagang pahalagahan. Pero alam natin na maging ang pamilya natin at personal na ambisyon para sa sarili o sa pamily ay nakahahadlang sa buong pusong pagsunod kay Jesus. Tulad ng lalaking ito. Kung patay na ang tatay niya, wala namang masamang pumunta siya sa funeral service. Sandali lang naman iyon. Pero ang obligasyon natin sa ‘Kaharian ng Diyos’ ay higit na mahalaga. Kung buhay pa ang tatay niya, sinasabi niyang hihintayin muna niyang mamatay. That’s delayed obedience to Jesus. Hindi niya naman alam kung kelan iyon. Kung hinihintay niya ang mamanahin niya, inuuna niya ang sariling ambisyon niya.

But Jesus told him, “Let the spiritually dead bury their own dead! Your duty is to go and preach about the Kingdom of God” (v. 60). We have a duty to those who are spiritually dead – to awaken them toward life in the kingdom. Hindi sinasabi ni Jesus na iwan na natin ang mga obligasyon natin sa pamilya o sariling ambisyon, pero kung dumating ang panahong papipiliin ka ng Diyos kung susunod ka sa kanyang misyon – alam mo dapat kung ano ang uunahin mo.

Resoluteness even over attachment to family. Wala na sigurong mas mahirap iwan kaysa sa pamilya. Another said, “Yes, Lord, I will follow you, but first let me say good-bye to my family” (v. 61). But we must be resolute to follow Jesus and his mission even over attachment with family o sa mga taong importante sa atin. “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters–yes, even their own life–such a person cannot be my disciple” (14:26 NIV). Wala namang masamang magpaalam sa pamilya. Pero nakikita ni Jesus ang puso ng isang tao. Alam niya kung pinapahalagahan natin ang pamilya natin nang higit sa kanya. Pasalamat tayo kasi marami sa atin, kasama natin ang pamilya sa participation sa mission ng Diyos. Pero para sa iba, ang relasyon n’yo sa pamilya ay nagiging distraction. But Jesus told him, “Anyone who puts a hand to the plow and then looks back is not fit for the Kingdom of God” (v. 62 NLT). We need to focus. Dapat buo ang loob natin sa pagsunod kay Jesus. No turning back, no turning back.

Jesus is Worthy

Jesus is worth it. Sulit iwan ang lahat dahil sa kanyang mga pangakong higit na mainam kaysa sa bahay, sa pamilya at sa personal na ambisyon. Pansinin n’yo na wala namang masama sa bahay, sa pamilya, sa negosyo. They’re good. But Jesus is calling us to leave these things for something much better. Nang malapit na sila sa Jerusalem, sabi ni Pedro kay Jesus, “See, we have left our homes and followed you.” Sagot naman ni Jesus, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, (30)  who will not receive many times more in this time, and in the age to come eternal life” (18:28-30).

Kilala na natin kung sino si Jesus. Alam na natin kung ano ang misyon niya. Alam na natin ang mga pangako niya. Dapat nating marealize na kapag tinawag tayo ni Jesus na sumunod sa kanya, tulad ng sabi ng German pastor na pinatay noong panahon ni Hitler, “When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die.” Jesus was inviting us, “Come and die with me.” Bilang pastor ninyo na inatasan ng Diyos na pangunahan kayo sa susunod na taon, and hopefully for many more years, na tuparin ang misyong ibinigay ng Diyos sa BBCC, I’m inviting all of you: “Come and die with me.”
