When we talk about the gospel or the good news of salvation, we often go to the New Testament. But we must not overlook the fact that this gospel of God’s amazing love for his people is also found in the Old Testament.
You just have to open your Bible and read Hosea, for a start. This book is located in our Bible in the section we call “The Minor Prophets.” Minor, because it is relatively short compared to “The Major Prophets” (like Isaiah). But its message is definitely a major one.
As you read, listen to Hosea’s message to Israel. Listen to the way God speaks to Israel through Hosea’s marriage to Gomer. As you do, can you not also say, “This is amazing love, indeed!”?
“And in that day, declares the LORD, you will call me ‘My Husband,’ and no longer will you call me ‘My Baal’. For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, and they shall be remembered by name no more…And I will betroth you to me forever. I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy. I will betroth you to me in faithfulness. And you shall know the LORD” (Hosea 2:16-17, 19-20).
