Do you believe that God has the power to change your heart and the hearts of the people around you? Or do you believe that it is something we can accomplish? The answer to these questions depend on how you pray and what you pray for. So I invite you now to act on what you believe. You can say, “I believe that God has the power to change hearts.” But if you don’t pray for God to do it, then you don’t really believe it.
Proclaim back to God his greatness and goodness and recount where in the previous stories you have seen that. (Deuteronomy 32:3-4, 43)
I will proclaim your name, ascribe greatness to you, O Lord. You are our rock of refuge. With you on their side, the Israelites were not defeated by their enemies. You deserve our whole-hearted worship. You became angry when your people made a golden calf to worship, when they whore after other gods, when they chose other things more than you. You are forever faithful. Even when your people were stubborn, you forgave their sins and fulfilled your promises when they turn again toward you.
Ask God to forgive the stubbornness of our hearts. Pray that he will turn our hearts toward him. (Deuteronomy 29:18-19)
Even when you give us a lot of warnings, we still become stubborn. Forgive us, Lord, for turning our hearts away from you and clinging to worthless idols like entertainment, food and sex. Break our hearts and reveal our sinfulness. Don’t let us become presumptuous. Don’t let us think that we’re OK and only others are not. Don’t let us believe the lies of the Enemy. Don’t let us entertain the thought that we can still be happy eventhough we go against your will.
Pray for the transformation of the hearts of your family and friends toward more love for God. (Deuteronomy 30:6)
Lord, you promised that you will cause by your Spirit the transformation of our hearts and our children’s hearts, so that we will love you with all our heart and so that we will live a full and blessed life. Will you continue to do what you promised and change the hearts of the people I love – my wife, my son, my relatives, my friends, and my brothers and sisters in church.
Pray for many households to be together in worshipping and rejoicing before God. (Deuteronomy 26:11)
Create in my heart a “holy discontent” for the state of many families today. I want to celebrate your blessings with my whole family, including my son’s nanny. May she also rejoice in the blessings that she has in Christ. May you create this burden in the hearts of every household heads, that they will see their whole family giving you the honor due your great and awesome name.
Pray for a more intimate relationship with God. Pray that as you grow intimate with him, he will unleash his mighty works through your life. (Deuteronomy 34:10-12)
I know that your Word says that “there has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses” whom you knew deeply and intimately. But you also said in your Word that Jesus is greater (much greater!) than Moses. And that those of us in Jesus can do greater things, when we ask for it! I ask now that you grant the desire of my heart for a more intimate relationship with you. Use me to accomplish your purposes in this world. Show your mighty power through the life of your servant.
Praise God for all the things he revealed to us in his Word. (Deuteronomy 29:29)
Thank you, Lord, that eventhough I don’t know a lot of things, you chose to reveal the things I need to know in your Word. Thank you that this Word cannot be taken away from us and our children forever. Thank you that you are at work in our hearts, transforming us to be like your Son Jesus.
