Some of our church members joined the latest social media craze #makeuptransformation. If you want to make one for me, since I’m too lazy to do that, try Ping Lacson or Kiko Pangilinan.
My wife and I had a good laugh while browsing through some of these make up transformations. And this is one thing we need to thank God for. We can laugh and we can enjoy life. These are gifts from God (Ecc. 3:12-13; Jas. 1:17). Aside from that, it takes some creative effort on their part to do this. This is also a reflection of the artistry and creativity of God our Creator.
Although most of us will do this just for fun, I believe that there is in all of us a desire to be like someone greater. Deep down in our hearts, we believe that if only we can be like someone more beautiful, more powerful, more significant than we are, then we can find the approval, worth, and happiness we long for.
This is part of how God created us. But when we look for these in something or someone other than God, this reflects the sad reality of our brokenness because of sin. We try to apply “makeups” so that others will like us. We hide, we pretend, and we cover ourselves.
But the good news is, we no longer need to do that. Why? Jesus Christ already died on the cross for us. He took our sin, our guilt and our shame. We now have the approval, worth and happiness we need because Jesus secured that for us on the cross. If we put our faith in him, we are united with him, and God graciously looks at us as he looks at his beloved Son Jesus.
Because we are in Jesus, the Holy Spirit is in us. He is the one doing real transformation in our hearts so that we will become like Jesus (2 Cor. 3:18). Like him in loving God and like him in loving others. This is the process of transformation all God’s children are going through. It is not quick, and it is sometimes painful. But it is real. We will be in this for the long haul, but it is not just a craze that will come and will soon fade away. We will really be like Jesus when he comes again.
Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is (1 John 3:2 NLT).
