What Keeps Me Going: 9 Years and Counting

Yesterday marks my nine years of serving our church family – Baliwag Bible Christian Church – as leading pastor. Here are my…
nine rock-solid convictions for nine years of pastoral ministry

I am called by God to be a pastor only by his grace, not because I am more deserving, more qualified or more capable than other people.

My identity is not anchored in my performance as a pastor but in the finished work of Christ on the cross.

My joy comes from God’s perfect approval and affirmation of me in light of my union with Christ, not in other people’s evaluation of me.

I am called by God not just to be a faithful pastor to our church but also to be a faithful husband to my wife and faithful father to our children.

As a preacher of God’s Word, my task is to passionately point people to the gospel and its transforming power in our lives.

I must point people to Christ not just in my speaking but in following the steps of Christ, the Great Shepherd, in caring, tending, guiding, protecting and binding the wounds of his flock.

I have to preach while teaching people how to read the Bible, to disciple while training them how to disciple, to lead while equipping other leaders to work alongside me or be released for mission.

I need friends – pastors and non-pastors – who will treat me as a brother, hold me accountable, remind me of the gospel, and fight for me until the end.

There is a great need for gospel renewal among many churches in the Philippines. I need to do something about it. I will do something about it.
